Shaldon Festival of Music 2027

Trio Bohémo performing at the Shaldon Festival of Music

Four evenings of chamber music return to St Peter’s Church in June 2027, the same volunteer-run festival that has occupied the building since 1990. The church sits on higher ground above the Teign estuary, its Grade I listed Arts and Crafts interior still the only venue.

The festival was started by cellist Eileen Croxford Parkhouse as a single memorial concert for her husband David, professor of piano at the Royal College of Music and a founder of the Music Group of London. It quickly became an annual event.

The committee remains entirely voluntary, keeps ticket prices low with the help of local sponsorship and grants, and maintains a direct link to the Parkhouse Award, the biennial competition for young piano chamber ensembles whose winners often appear in Shaldon.

Workshops for local school pupils continue alongside the evening concerts.

This year’s outline runs from Wednesday 16 June to Saturday 19 June, with performances starting at 7.30pm. The first night is given to the Astra Quartet, a young ensemble of two violins, viola and cello.

The second evening brings baritone Roderick Williams OBE and pianist Anna Tilbrook in a programme titled “Voyage around Dichterliebe” that ends with the complete Schumann song cycle.

Friday features oboist Ewan Millar, winner of the 2025 Royal Over-Seas League Gold Medal. The closing night is James Pearson’s trio in “An Evening with Oscar Peterson”.

Full programmes and ticket details will follow once booking opens. Further information is available on the festival website at https://shaldonfestival.co.uk/ or on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/ShaldonFestival/. Advice on parking and the short walk from the village centre is available from the organisers, along with the option to join the Friends scheme for early booking.
