The Street With No Name: Teignmouth’s curious alleyway

In the middle of Teignmouth stands a thoroughfare that announces its own lack of identity. The Street With No Name runs for less than twenty metres between two blocks of houses on Regent Street. It holds no residential addresses and serves mainly as a pedestrian link towards the open ground that once formed the Esplanade.

Local heritage researchers describe it as an old wide alleyway that has existed in some form since the early nineteenth century. Maps from 1790 show houses only on the north side of what became Regent Street. By 1805 Den House had appeared on the south, and by 1828 buildings lined both sides with a clear gap between them. That gap remains today.

The space opens from the former East Teignmouth market area onto ground that once held two substantial Victorian hotels, the Esplanade and the Berkeley. Both faced the Promenade until wartime bombing left them beyond repair. They were later demolished and the site became a small car park.

The alley therefore connects the older street pattern of the town centre with a later open space created by conflict.

Why the gap was never filled is uncertain. One suggestion is that developers deliberately left room between the newer, smaller buildings and the more substantial Den House. Whatever the reason, the passage stayed open while the surrounding streets filled with the terraces and shops that still define this part of Teignmouth.

The official name itself is relatively recent. It does not appear on older maps, including late twentieth-century Ordnance Survey sheets. Heritage centre records suggest the designation was applied by the local authority in the past couple of decades, turning an informal gap into a recognised street with its own entry in the national gazetteer. It is recorded as a private road rather than a public highway.

The Street With No Name now sits among Devon’s collection of unusual place names, listed alongside more colourful examples elsewhere in the county. For walkers exploring Teignmouth it offers a brief, slightly odd shortcut between Regent Street and the seafront area. It carries no shops or houses, yet its sign and its history give the short stretch a quiet presence of its own.

In a town shaped by fishing, resorts and wartime change, the alley stands as a small reminder that not every space needs a conventional label to hold its place in the street plan.
