The Old Toll House, Shaldon

The Old Toll House, Shaldon

The Old Toll House stands beside Shaldon Bridge where it has collected tolls since around 1827. Grade II listed status protects its painted stucco exterior and symmetrical front with canted bay. Today the building functions as a spacious holiday cottage that spreads over three floors and sleeps up to eight guests.

Ground floor space holds a dining room equipped with an additional fridge-freezer. The adjacent kitchen features a gas hob, dishwasher and microwave alongside standard appliances. A utility room provides washing machine access and opens to the enclosed rear courtyard garden. This outdoor area offers a sheltered spot for seating or play.

The village of Shaldon clusters around its harbour and beach in a sheltered position on the Teign estuary. Compact lanes hold a range of properties from fishermen’s cottages to larger Georgian houses. Coastal paths head out to the Ness headland where views open across the water and along the coastline. A tunnel through the rock leads to Ness Cove Beach on the other side.

Central staircase creating an easy, uncluttered layout.

Local facilities cover day-to-day needs with a post office, newsagent and small supermarket options. Eating choices include fresh seafood at nearby establishments and traditional pub fare. The area supports walking, with routes along the South West Coast Path accessible directly from the village.

Positioning next to the bridge allows straightforward access by car or on foot to Teignmouth on the opposite bank. Further afield the English Riviera towns of Torquay, Paignton and Brixham sit within driving distance, as do inland options towards Dartmoor.

The setting retains a genuine coastal atmosphere without large-scale development. Daily rhythms follow the tide and ferry timetable, while the historic toll house itself anchors the scene with its links to earlier trade and travel across the river.
