The Ship Inn

The Ship Inn

The Ship Inn occupies a prominent position on Queen Street in Teignmouth, directly beside the back beach and the Teign Estuary. From its outdoor tables and benches, the outlook extends across the water to Shaldon and the moored boats that move with the tide. This waterfront placement provides a constant backdrop of shifting light and maritime activity, whether the estuary lies calm under sunlight or reflects the colours of a cloudy sky.

The building itself carries a long association with the town’s seafaring past. Originally known as The Pilot in the 1830s, it stands among the earliest inns along the river beach. A plaque on the wall records the names of fourteen local men who served at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805, a reminder of Teignmouth’s historical links to the Royal Navy and maritime trade.

The interior retains the character of a traditional pub – wooden floors, low beams, and a central bar – while accommodating diners in a comfortable gallery area.

The kitchen prepares a range of British pub dishes using ingredients sourced from Devon suppliers. Fresh fish and seafood feature regularly, reflecting the town’s coastal location, alongside roasts, grills, and hearty plates suited to the seaside setting. Breakfast options include cooked dishes and substantial baps, while the main menu balances familiar classics with lighter contemporary choices. Ales from regional breweries complement the food, with a selection of ciders and wines also available.

The pub maintains a straightforward, welcoming atmosphere. Staff attend to both regular patrons and those arriving from the beach or promenade. Dogs are permitted in the bar and outdoor areas, adding to the informal feel. The combination of estuary views, reliable cooking, and unpretentious service draws a steady mix of local people and those exploring the South Devon coast.
